About the Author
Carol F. Shuler, L. A. is president of C. F. Shuler, Inc., a landscape architecture firm in Scottsdale, Arizona. She studied architecture, landscape architecture and horticulture at the University of Arizona. Since 1970, she has provided consulting services in Arizona, Nevada and California. During her career, she has resolved diverse design challenges from urban pedestrian malls to riparian habitat mitigation.
Shuler applies the principles of horticulture and ecology in every design for the purpose of achieving climate mitigation, erosion control and improved wildlife habitat. The result, through lowered water and energy use, is a landscape that is friendly to the environment.
Shuler's appreciation of the fragility of the native southwestern environment propels her work. Most of her large-scale projects include salvaging native plants prior to construction for reuse in the landscape. Since 1989, her firm has tagged over 15,000 plants for salvage.
Shuler is a leader in innovative landscape approaches that mesh the expertise of engineers, hydrologists and landscape architects to find environmentallyresponsible solutions to site conditions. Her award-winning work combines ecology, horticulture and the mitigation of natural elements such as climate and flood control, earning her a reputation as a pioneer in her field.
