Wildly colorful (and not extremely difficult once you get the hang of it), Deborah Gonet's machine embroidery designs do not require an elaborate computerized sewing machine, just a machine capable of freestyle sewing (meaning that the feed dog can be lowered or covered so you can sew in all directions). Then, with an embroidery hoop, an array of colorful threads, and some silk, velvet, or cotton, you can create stunning clothing, accessories, and home furnishings. The book's final section details all the basic techniques and includes complete clothing patterns (along with specifications for enlarging them on a photocopier). The bulk of the book presents step-by-step instructions for 23 projects, enabling the reasonably proficient sewer to transform circles, squiggles, zigzags, flowers, stars, and planet motifs into adornments for very attractive shirts, vests, hats, scarves, bags, buttons, quilts, pillows, and curtain tiebacks. The directions are fairly thorough but do require patience and practice. Still, the beautiful results should inspire novice stitchers to perfect their skills, while the more experienced will find this a rich sourcebook. --Amy Handy
