About the Author
When I was about eight years old, my younger sister, Brigitta, and I would spend the long summer days drawing and painting on the blank pieces of cardboard my mother brought home from work. We never worried about whether we were really creating art-in fact, we even got it into our heads that we could sell our artwork. (After all, we saw artists doing this all the time at the park by the local zoo.) Amazingly, we did! My mother sold one cardboard painting to a coworker, and the most memorable sale of all, the neighbor who saw us hawking our art in front of the house, lemonade-stand style, and actually bought one! If artists need to make a sale for validation, then I guess we really were artists! But, back then, the only thing that mattered was that we were having fun.
I've long ago abandoned drawing and painting, but every now and then, I'll buy a pack of crayons or set of markers just to doodle for fun. As a former cardboard artist, I love the scrapbook pages and projects showcased in this Artistic Effects set-they remind us that your "canvas" doesn't have to be cardstock…it can be absolutely anything: watercolor paper, a plain box, a photo frame, an album cover and the list goes on! Check out Tracie Smith's "Collections" album on page 54. I love how she has created an eye-catching keepsake book using decoupage to celebrate her son's affinity for collecting trading cards.
Each and every project in this set features a creative idea or fun technique that you can try on your own pages or craft projects with different arts and crafts supplies. So I hope you'll accept the challenge to push your creative boundaries-and most importantly, discover new ways to enjoy your art!
