Editorial Reviews
Review
E.P. Fowler Literary Review of Canada : "Sewell does an excellent job of covering the bases... a thoughtful analysis... a sourcebook on the issues and programs dealing with Canadian housing."
Terry Kruger Compass : "A solid and interesting book on a subject that in other hands might have been too large or too complex to handle.
His examination of the problem of homelessness is poignant and revealing."
Christine Hughes Canadian Book Review : "A balanced account of housing programs and legislation from across Canada... a comprehensive review and assessment of some of the important housing issues facing Canadians today."
Brian Osborne Canadian Geographic : "Sewell has provided us with a well-researched and well-written primer on the Canadian urban condition. In these "greening" times, society is ecoming increasingly concerned with the need for nuturing nature. This book is an appropriate reminder of the need for forward-looking planning of that most immediate environmental envelope that surrounds us all: the domestic ecology bounded by walls and roofs, and the social ecology produced by the invisible bonds of neighbourhood and community"

Book Description
In this comprehensive study published in 1994, former Toronto mayor John Sewell considers a range housing issues in Canada.

Writing in a style that is accessible and direct, Sewell considers public, private, and social housing. He looks at affordability and need, discusses definitions of good housing and good neighbourhoods, and examines the various approaches that governments have taken since World War II to increase the stock of reasonably priced housing, showing why these approaches have consumed large amounts of public dollars yet have often failed. In a time of shrinking public expenditures, he proposes the kinds of solutions necessary to ensure that all Canadians are well housed.

Sewell's thought-provoking analysis will be of interest to all who believe that Canadians deserve affordable housing.
