Without doubt, much carpentry has been carried on by the rule-of-thumb method. By means of this book the carpenter who may not have been given full specifications as to sizes can be assured that joists, girders, rafters, and the like, are strong enough to bear the usual loads. The major part of the book is concerned with technical information relating to the types of jobs which constantly recur in the building of houses. The last two chapters cover the characteristics of wood and the grading of lumber. Without doubt the carpenter who knows something about the structure of wood, its strength, characteristics, and the fundamentals of grading has a great advantage over the carpenter without this knowledge.
