"Dande-licious! Author shares passion for dandelions," by Mary Ann Slater, Indiana Gazette Staff Writer, May 10, 1998
Those mop-headed yellow flowers popping up on your spring lawn may not be the nuisance that many homeowners believe they are.
"The plant has so many good things about it," said Joanne Juliette Henry, a writer from Indiana. "It has been used in many ways throughout the ages,"
To share her passion with others, Henry has written "Dandelions Are Free," a 138-page book full of stories, poems, recipes, and tips that celebrate the golden-yellow flowering plant.
...
So Henry kept at her research. She collected recipes from far and wide and gathered work from artists, cartoonists and poets. She also thought about stories from friends and family about the nutritional and medicinal value of the plant.
Every spring, she and her siblings gathered dandelions for her mother and grandmother. "My grandmother threw them into everything ... spaghetti, fried potatoes."
"Pick a Flower, make a wish," by Jan Woodard, The Tribune-Review, Nov. 30, 1997
Unlike more civil rivals, dandelions are free spirits--puffy wisps of seeds carried by the wind. Capturing that winsome theme, this little book's title comes from a poem of the same name written by henry in 1982, "Dandelions Are Free."
It makes good reading, almost like a chapbook, for those who enjoy plain pleasures of nature, ideally while curled up with a cup of dandelion tea--several recipes of which are suggested in the chapter on beverages.
. . .
Henry's enthusiasm for the plants inspired Wanchisn. Her delicate, detailed penned drawings add to the book's charm. One is based on a photograph of Wanchisn as a 4-year-old, sniffing a dandelion. She recalls a favorite childhood game: "Blow on a puff ball and get all those little helicopters to carry your wish. It was great when there weren't jacks or jump ropes to play with."
