Book Description
Stretching from the eastern half of the island of New Guinea to many islands of the neighboring archipelago, Papua New Guinea is an orchid wonderland. Its many variations of climate and habitat support a diverse orchid population, including a large number of species of Dendrobium, but also epiphytic and terrestrial orchids from a wide range of groups within the orchid family. This introduction will be welcome to the thousands of growers who are discovering the beauty of these orchids.
About the Author
Andreé Millar went to Papua New Guinea with her husband in 1947. She worked at the Lae Botanic Gardens and became director of the National Botanic Gardens at the university in Port Moresby (PNG). She has published and lectured widely in Australia about orchids, and her contributions have been recognized by the nation of Papua New Guinea as well as the Malaysian Orchid Society and the Australian Orchid Council. She died in 1997. According to Plant Science Bulletin, the people of New Guinea who encountered her during her research gave her the Pidgin-English nickname: "Long-Long Misis Bilong Plauau." Millar translates this as: "slightly mad but not dangerous white woman who collects useless plants you can't eat."
