My Kind of Garden: Photographs & Insights on Creating a Personal Garden

Garden photographer Richard Brown spent years enjoying the fruits of others' horticultural labor and planning his own ideal garden in his head. When the time came to plant his fantasy garden on his Vermont property, he found (after several seasons' hard work) that its proportions were out of whack and the plants were wrong for the climate. Back to square one for the gardener. Brown describes--at length, and not without humor--how he has learned to work with his garden, not wrestle with it.
Though this is a book of gorgeous photographs, not one of them is of Brown's garden--which is slightly frustrating, like hearing the beauty regimen of a veiled lady described. But Brown's gentle insistence that a gardener must, first of all, be true to his or her own space does sink in. In the end, this is less a book about his garden than about yours.
