About the Author
Erica Calkins was born in Albuquerque, NM and grew au as what she describes as a "military brat."
After graduating from high school in Concord, CA, she headed for the Pacific Northwest to become the third generation of her family to attend Oregon State University, at Corvallis. She graduated in 1981 with a BS degree in History Science and a minor in Naval Science. She served as a communications officer in the United States Marine Corps and obtained her Master's equivalent in Education from Pacific University in Vista, CA in 1985.
Erica taught and worked in the education field in New Jersey and North Carolina before moving to Aloha, OR in 1988 where she taught math and science for talented and gifted programs at OMSI and St. Mary's of the Valley. She also worked at the Oregon State University Extension Experiment Station.
In 1992, Erica and her family moved to Oregon City, the Western terminus of the historic Oregon Trail. There she founded Niggletytwist, a business devoted to preserving pioneer plants and folkways. The name comes from the West Virginia farm where her grandmother was raised.
As a living history specialist, Erica promotes homestead arts. She conducts classes and speaks on a variety of pioneer topics including historic home brewing, heritage gardening, pioneer roses and homestead cooking. She and her business have been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles and television interviews.
Erica and her husband Brian, a rescue helicopter pilot, have four children: Ian, Jessica, Roy and Holly.
