This Rambling Affair: A Year in a Country Garden
Editorial Reviews
The Olympian, April 11, 1999
This Rambling Affair is a delightful tour through Kennedy's 11-acre garden on one of BC's Gulf Islands. A do-it-yourselfer whose wisdom derives from the busted-knuckles-knicked-by-secateurs school of experience, Kennedy mixes pragmatic gardening tips with environmentally sound principles, aesthetic flair, and a whimsical sense of humor.
HortIdeas, May 1999
This Rambling Affair isn't a book about how to garden (though it provides, incidentally, all sorts of useful gardening tidbits). It's a book of essays, some inspiring, some rapturous, some melancholy--all touched (in a good sense!) with Kennedy's unique sense of humor. There's one essay for each week of the year, but once you start reading, you probably won't be able to limit yourself to reading one per week; you'll probably want to read the whole book straight through! The essays we appreciate most are those in which Kennedy tells of mistakes or miscalculations or foibles in his gardening. We find it comforting that even the most devoted (and expert) gardener sometimes makes (even disastrous) mistakes, just like us. Read and enjoy!
