Encompassing part or all of 28 eastern U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, the central hardwood forests cover a variety of habitats and include trees adapted to a broad range of conditions. This book describes 188 native or naturalized tree species found in these forests, plus 84 trees that are commonly planted in the region.
About the Author
Donald J. Leopold is Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State University of New York, Syracuse, where he has won numerous teaching awards and researches the ecology of old-growth forests and wetlands, the biology of rare plant species, and the biodiversity and restoration of ecosystems. His public presentations on gardening with native plants are enthusiastically attended. He is author of Trees of the Central Hardwood Forests of North America: An Identification and Cultivation Guide and numerous other contributions on plants. William C. McComb is chairman of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Robert N. Muller is chairman of the Department of Forestry, University of Kentucky, Lexington.
