Swiss Furniture and Interiors 1900-2000
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
For the first time, the development of interiors and furniture in Switzerland from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day have been surveyed and documented. Following introductory essays by Lucius Burckhardt and Stanislaus von Moos, both experts in design research, there are seven main chapters each focusing on a period of 15 years; these are complemented by detailed information on those masterpieces which can be considered to define the epoch. Some 20 representative interiors reveal the significant changes which have taken place in living space in the 20th century. A fully illustrated catalogue of over 300 objects from furniture to ceramics and household objects and around 150 biographies conclude the publication. Much of the information was previously inaccessible and contains invaluable details regarding the origins and the production of the objects. This book is a fascinating compendium of the great classics in Swiss design, with rare early works and countless new pieces. A large part of the furniture has been photographed especially for this publication and the model furnished interiors have been drawn to the same scale. This indispensable standard work has been edited by Professor Arthur Rüegg and been produced in collaboration with the Design Collection of the Zurich Museum for Design, the Society for Swiss History of Art in Berne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
