The Brodsworth Hall Chintz
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Chintz, or glazed printed cotton fabric, was an important part of many nineteenth - and twentieth-century decorative schemes. Bold and colourful chintzes were used for curtains, bed hangings and loose covers for furniture in sets intended for whole suites of rooms. The chintz at Brodsworth Hall in Yorkshire is an important collection that has survived in astonishing completeness, and comprises over 500 pieces in over 100 designs from the 1840's to the 1980's. The collection has been catalogued and conserved, and is the subject of an exhibition at Brodsworth. This book, beautifully illustrated with both modern and archive photographs, accompanies the exhibition and offers a fascinating insight into Victorian decorative fashions. Chapters on the history and the use of chintz provide an important and fascinating background to the story. 128 color photographs.
