In dit boek wordt de architectuur niet beschouwd als een autonoom verschijnsel en ook niet in haar relaties tot alle mogelijke andere voor haar bijkomstige gebieden van het menselijk leven, maar in haar fundamentele betrekking tot de natuur, die zij aanvult en uitdrukt. Ook de fenomenen binnen de architectuur zelf worden niet los van elkaar gezien of afhankelijk van bijkomstige motieven, maar in hun wezenlijke onderlinge relaties: de ruimte binnen het huis tot de ruimte buiten, de vorm van de wand tot de vorm van de ruimte binnen, de grootte van de lijn tot de grootte van het vlak en het volume. Tenslotte worden al deze fenomenen onderworpen aan een allesbeheersend getal waardoor het huis voor zijn bewoner niet alleen een materieel maar ook een geestelijk bezit wordt.
