Book Description
The world is a different place for our daughters than it was for our generation, and it is light-years away from what it was in our mothers' time. Yet some truths still apply, and some experiences are universal. Girl Truths attempts to capture and articulate the essence of girlhood and what it means to be a "girl" in our time. Though aimed primarily at teenagers and preteens, this is a fun book for girls and women of all ages. It has no agenda to push; its purpose is to present simple, unadorned truths to girls about what they need to know about life.

When Andrea Carey's mother was diagnosed with cancer, they began working together on a project for the author's daughter-and for daughters everywhere. They started writing down things they had learned, advice they had been given, and bits of wisdom they had picked up from family and friends. These were simple truths-easy to remember, mostly common sense-but powerful in their simplicity. It quickly became a consuming project for mother and daughter. They wanted to leave a record, a guidebook of the "things I want you to know, even if some day I am no longer here to say them."

In talking to young girls, Andrea was reminded of her good fortune in having a loving mother to guide her along the way. She also realized how many girls face the challenges and unknowns of growing up without anyone to share life lessons or even to say, "I understand. I've felt that way before." Girl Truths offers small signposts along the road of girls' lives.

Addressing girls everywhere, Andrea says, "You have a long and winding road ahead of you, fulls of twists and turns, with unseen joys and dilemmas lurking around every corner. Life is both unpredictable and wonderful. It can make you so gloriously happy you laugh out loud, and can also be so unfair that you want to rage and shake your fist at the sky. Do both, but live fully. Life doesn't begin when you reach a certain goal or you are a certain age. It is going on around you right now...I stand in wonder at the journey you have ahead of you and in awe of the women you will become."
