Book Description
An authoritative group of researchers, motivated by inexact scholarship on black families conducted in the past, examine the contemporary African-American family. They find, not surprisingly, that it is faced with severe and increasingly grave problems. The authors reject the "conventional" perspective urged in the past and establish a holistic perspective. That approach relies on an analysis based on the totality of black family life. They seek thereby to establish a foundation in understanding that will allow some correction of longstanding problems plaguing blacks in America. Factors external to the family including racism, economic considerations, demographics, and governmental policies are closely studied. In addition, important elements which are internal to the black community are analyzed. They involve changes within the black community itself; in black family structure; and at the individual level of values. The subject matter is critically important to American society and the approach is informed and insightful. The work is clearly presented.
