Knight's Hill, The Story Of A Family In War
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Knight's Hill, The Story of a Family in War is a true tale of the contributions made by the children and grandchildren of Roy and Martha Knight. It is made unique by the courage and intrepidity shown in combat during World War II, The Korean War, The Viet Nam War and in response to the terrorist attack on the Kobar Towers in Saudi Arabia.
This is a story of valor, duty and perseverance: of life as we lived it, with the integration of tragedy and joy, sadness and humor. All seven brothers served in the military, five in combat and two others in the occupation of Japan and Germany. Three of the brothers were decorated with our nation's hightest honors for gallantry. Jack, the oldest, received the Medal of Honor posthumously, along with the Purple Heart and in 1999, the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor presented by then Governor George W. Bush to my sister, June. Curtis, in the same battle, earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart in their only battle of war, while taking the Burma Road from the Japanese. Roy, Jr., the sixth son, flying with a search and rescue commando squadron out of Thailand in 1967 received posthumously every medal for valor except the Medal of Honor. The courageous actions of Bryan, Roy's son, during the Kobar Towers attack in 1996 is also part of the story.
I have made extensive use of primary sources including family letters, declassified military documents and interviews with family members, especially Curtis and his army comrades. I have relied upon my memories to tell my part of the story. A substantial portion of the book concentrates on World War II with interwoven events at home and in the war. In doing this, I tell my own story, one of fallibility mixed with allegiance to my country and fidelity to my family, the story of the seventh son who was six years old when my three oldest brothers joined a horse cavalry unit in November1940 through the tragic events in Burma in February 1945. Overriding this I have highlighted the anxiety, pride and faith of parents who provide the warriors of our survival. It is written for patriots, about patriots, by a patriot.
