A practical, hands-on book for people working with emergent, developing, and at-risk readers in the preschool and early elementary years. Initial shared book experiences with Big Book versions of favorite predictable stories lead students into concrete learning experiences across the curriculum. An annotated bibliography of more than 100 children's books is included.
From the Back Cover
Don Holdaway's 1979 work "The Foundations of Literacy" describes teachers in New Zealand who made their own oversize versions of children's books to read aloud in their classrooms. Today teachers the world over are buying and making these Big Books to use in "shared book experiences," times when they gather students together in a comfortable spot to read and learn from favorite books. These oversize texts allow teachers to recreate a relaxed, "bedtime story" atmosphere with a group of children and to begin the process of exposing new and developing readers to books, print, and reading.
This is the starting point for Judith Pollard Slaughter's "Beyond Storybooks." In addition to suggesting ways to make and introduce Big Book versions of some well-loved and predictable stories, "Beyond Storybooks" describes how shared book experiences can lead to learning across the curriculum. Inside are teaching tips, book recommendations, ideas for classroom organization, complete descriptions of theme units, and suggestions for integrating shared book experiences in math, science, social studies, and throughout the literacy program. So wander through this hands-on volume and find ideas to help young children move beyond storybooks and become active members in the community of readers.
